About this tool

eXeLearning

eXeLearning is an authoring tool that allows you to produce eLearning content without web design or programming experience. Of course there are numerous commercial authoring tools with a wealth of functionalities and (often substancial) costs. But only a few of these tools allow content matter experts (trainers, educators, academic staff) to produce professional instructional content quickly and without much prior training at very low cost. With eXeLearning, you can produce your content locally and offline on your computer and distribute it after export on CD-ROM (offline), online or on web based learning management systems.

Open source

eXeLearning is an open source product and can be used free of charge. Its further development depends on the activities and cooperation of its user- and developer community. The development of eXeLearning began in 2004, originating from a working group from the tertiary education sector of New Zealand. Today, the government of Spain is supporting eXeLearning and using it as a preferred tool in teachers education accross the country. A dedicated teamm of developers in spain and many volunteer network members improve the tool constantly.

Technical framework

eXeLearning was compiled in the Python programming language and is based on the technology of the open source web browser Mozilla Firefox.
For export, eXeLearning compiles the different content objects into an XML format. This enables export into current SCORM or IMS standard compliant content packages. These can - in turn - be imported into most Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Instructional elements

eXeLearning is built on the idea of a compilation of instructional elements, the so called iDevices (Instructional Devices). These iDevices mirror instructional forms and formats known from the classroom setting. In online training, these pedagogical tools compliment theoretical content with interactive activities.

Rapid development

With eXeLearning, you can develop substantial storyboard-based content projects or use it as rapid development tool. On principal, it is useful for both kinds of production processes although its main strength is the rapid, uncomplicated production by content matter experts, who are not media production experts.
