eXeLearning Tips and Tricks
Here you will find a list of helpful tips, tricks and workarounds that we have discovered in working with eXeLearning for the past years. In case you come accross additional hints that we need to publish here, please let us know. We look forward to receiving a short e-mail from you at a.bubenzer@common-sense.at.
Link to a website
Use the iDevice Free Text, provide text for a link, click on the link icon and choose URL and target frame
iDevice External Web Site
Calls up the actual website inside of your module. Use only when participants will ALWAYS have live Internet access. Otherwise, a broken link will display. Alternative: see above
Using Flash/MP3 - for example including Wink Flash as SWF file
Use the icon "insert/edit embedded media" in the iDevice Free Text.
Changing the displayed name of an iDevice
Insert the iDevice. Where available, you can change the title in the top text box of the iDevice.
There is no auto-save function in eXeLearning. Always save your work before closing. We suggest you also save after updating individual screens.
Unwanted empty spaces displaying in Microsoft Internet Explorer
This is a compatibility issue. eXeLearning optimizes for the browser Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft Internet Explorer does not entirely comply with W3C standards. Test your HTML output in Mozilla Firefox. Best option: deliver a current version of Firefox with your modules or tell your learners on the first screen that this module is "best viewed with Mozilla Firefox". Microsoft apparently will comply with standards in future Internet Explorer releases, so this problem should be rectified soon.
Unwanted characters ("endif - - >") displayed in Microsoft Internet Explorer
This is another compatibility issue. You can avoid it either by using Firefox (where this message it will not be displayed), or by going to the text box in question and erasing all the formatting, because these are old formatting left-overs from Word. After this, save your work, and export again. You then need to refresh the display in Internet Explorer, or even delete the cache before it will display properly. Avoid copying text directly from Word. Rather use the "Paste from Word" icon in all iDevices.
